365 Photo Challenge 2010

I’m not much for New Year’s resolutions, but I’ve decided to attempt the 365/2010 Photo Challenge.  The project, in theory, is quite simple; each day I take a photograph, upload it to Flickr, and tag it #edtech265/2010.  The reasons for participating in the challenge, however, are personal and complex; I want to improve my skills and learn more about myself and the world around me.

Having successfully completed the first week, I’ve taken a step toward my goal of becoming a better photographer and encountered some wonderful people along the way.  The EdTech 365/2010 Flickr Photo Group has connected me with friends old and new, and I’m continually amazed by the images they share each day.  While some of my photos are more composed than others, they’ve all given me an opportunity to reflect on the new decade.

I began the new year in Minnesota by capturing a bird about to take flight; the following day I witnessed sunrise over frozen Lake Mille Lac during the long drive home.  A leaky faucet was the inspiration for my third photograph, and a lost ball recovered in bare bushes represented January 4th.  With classes resuming, my next image highlighted the beautiful tire artwork from two eighth grade students, and unfortunately yesterday was marked by a trip to the ER with a kidney stone.  Last night’s snow canceled school today, and while I enjoyed the time off, our aging dog did not think much of answering nature’s call this morning.  The sum of the set is truly greater than the value of its parts.

It’s not too late to begin your own year-long challenge; January 1 is a convenient time to start but there are no hard or fast rules for expressing yourself other than to have fun.  If the demands of a daily photo commitment seem too much, consider following one or more of the many creative souls who have joined the endeavor.  It only takes a moment to view a daily pic but the impact can be timeless.
