Digital Literacy 09: OneNote

The start of school ushered in the second year of our 1:1 Tablet PC initiative, and consequently I am once again teaching 7th grade “Digital Literacy”.  Last fall, this eight session course included a variety of topics related to contemporary literacy:

Although I have some changes in mind for the coming term, we began the trimester with what has become an essential application for our program: Microsoft OneNote 2007.  When I introduce students to OneNote, I explain that it’s like a 3-ring binder with superpowers; users can easily reposition page elements, add color, hyperlinks, and multimedia, search ink, text, audio, and video, and share notebooks across the web.  Since I addressed some of these features last fall, I’d like to pass along three incredible (and free) resources that can enhance your OneNote experience:

OneNote Teacher Toolkit

  • Microsoft’s toolkit  includes a OneNote notebook with templates, how-to articles, training videos, examples, and other resources to help teachers start and then master the use of OneNote in the classroom.

Clip to OneNote

  • Firefox add-on that lets you send text, pictures, and other data to Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 or 2007 with one click.

I Heart OneNote

  • Billed as the world’s first and only OneNote 2007 community, the site includes blogs, notebooks, videos, and discussion forums.

If you haven’t tried OneNote yet, or are still using it much like a word processor, I would highly encourage you to work through the Getting Started Guide, explore the aforementioned resources, and discover why our students think taking notes is fun again!
