Digital Citizenship: Digital Etiquette
As part of our ongoing 7th grade Digital Citizenship program, this month our students explored Digital Etiquette. As electronic communication becomes ever more prevalent, the basic rules of proper behavior, especially as they relate to e-mail and cell phone use, cannot be overemphasized. This short clip, featuring Charlotte Dougherty’s drama class, illustrates an all too familiar scenario:
In addition to discussing the finer points of electronic manners with their advisors and parents, students also created images to reinforce basic etiquette principles. Using InkArt, Photoshop, and other creative tools, they crafted “etiquette reminders” that can be displayed in our school’s public spaces and computer labs:
Although Winter Break is fast approaching, we are already looking forward to January and a visit from noted author and educator Rosalind Wiseman. Over the course of two days, Rosalind will address our students, faculty, and parents regarding a number of issues related to Digital Citizenship. The concepts of safety, security, rights and responsibility will all be part of her message, and we are fortunate to be able to benefit from her insight as we move forward with this important initiative.
Until then, remember to “mind your manners” and in the words of one of our students:
