Digital Citizenship: Digital Communication

This month’s 7th grade Digital Citizenship topic, Digital Communication, focused on the electronic exchange of information.  Given the prevalence and relative simplicity of modern communication tools, it is important to use them appropriately.  This short clip (featuring a number of our 8th grade students) should give you some perspective:

Although the video portrayed a rather extreme scenario, it isn’t too far removed from the reality of how many of us communicate.  After watching and discussing the video at home, students and parents completed separate surveys regarding digital communication.  The results concerning which tools each population favors indicate that both groups employ a variety of devices:

When it comes to rules/guidelines, however, there seems to be a disconnect between students and their parents.  When asked if their family had rules concerning the use of these tools, students tended to say “no” while their parents generally said “yes”:

When asked if their family should have rules, parents overwhelmingly said “yes” while their children said “no”.  It appears there is room for further discussion concering students being aware of and understanding their parent’s expectations.  Hopefully our next topic, Digital Etiquette, will foster some face-to-face  conversations and get families on the same page regarding what they consider to be the proper way to communicate electronically.
