Digital Citizenship: A Student-Parent-Teacher Partnership
A few weeks ago I outlined our “Three-Stranded Approach” to our 1:1 Tablet PC initiative. The Digital Literacy course has explored OneNote and Web Evaluation, classroom teachers are utilizing the tablet in new and exciting ways, and I’m pleased to report that this week the 7th grade will begin a year-long Digital Citizenship Program.
I’ve touched on the importance of Digital Citizenship before, and after much work by many individuals, we now have a vehicle for bringing students, parents, and teachers together on this important topic. Using Bailey and Ribble’s work as a guide, each month we will explore one of the nine elements using the resources we’ve collected and created. By taking a school-home-school approach, we hope to make digital citizenship part of the fabric of our school’s culture and a way of life for our constituents.
As the year unfolds and each element is addressed, I’ll use this space to share what we have learned. In the meantime, I would invite you to explore the framework for our program and the details for our first topic, Digital Access. We’ve put a somewhat unique spin on the concept of access and hope that it resonates with the students, parents, and teachers who comprise this most-important partnership.
